Following structural and economic assessment, the municipality of Rünenberg decided to replace the existing sports and cultural centre with a high-quality new building.
The replacement structure is a two-storey building, 36 m long and 30 m wide, consisting of a small basement with plant rooms and storage, a ground floor with foyer, multipurpose hall, community rooms and a kitchen, and an upper floor with changing rooms and additional sanitary facilities. A new access wing connects it to the school building.
Following demolition of the old gymnasium, the foundations were first constructed with lean concrete piles and the ground slab. This foundation was necessary because the upper soil layers of the site were not load-bearing and the loads therefore had to be transferred to deeper, load-bearing strata.
The support structure consists of a hybrid timber frame with timber-concrete composite floors above the ground floor and a timber beam roof. In the basement, solid reinforced concrete walls withstand earth pressure and moisture. The stairwell core is also of reinforced concrete. On the ground and upper floors, timber columns and timber stud walls of spruce were employed for vertical and horizontal load transfer. The roof was fitted with a PV system.
The municipality is committed to sustainable construction. It supports local trades and aims to use regional raw materials in construction. This particularly concerns the use of timber from regional forest districts. New buildings should demonstrate high economic sustainability and be usable beyond the municipal boundaries. The KBOB recommendations for sustainable construction are to be followed.
The hall of the new sports and cultural centre extends over the ground and upper floors and features a stage. The window front facing northeast affords views over the hilly landscape of the Sissach region in the canton of Basel-Landschaft. An additional window opening at the rear of the stage provides views of the outdoor sports areas.
