The excavation pit and foundation are part of our overall concept for a building. In terms of structural physics, the basis for an optimal result comprises the pit wall, sealing, insulation and the geometry of the underground level.
And as we see the structure as a whole, we deliver the optimum, combining different lots, because truly compatible systems, from the foundation to the roof, are created by eliminating all interfaces.
Alongside building concepts, we also work in bridge construction. Here, we find the special combination of the art of engineering and aesthetic sensitivity particularly stimulating.
This hospital’s historic building fabric was to be preserved, but adapted to new requirements, while additional space was to be created – by extending upwards, outwards or downwards. St Claraspital in Basel opted for the latter in the so-called ‘Design North’ stage of its conversion and extension. Between the street and the main building, two new underground levels were installed for the kitchen and technical facilities, extending below the main building, which already had a partial underground level.
The spectacular bracing of the main building, the vertical pit walls on three sides and the conversion work conducted while the hospital was running are all examples of ZPF Ingenieure’s competence in underground engineering.
